London’s West End actress Julia Farino (www.juliafarino.com) is currently at the California Theatre in San Bernardino in the stage adaptation of ‘Calendar Girls’. The internationally acclaimed actress plays leading lady Chris, played by Helen Mirren in the original 2003 movie, with an all-star ensemble cast.
The stage production of ‘Calendar Girls’ is an adaptation of the award-winning film, both set in England and based on the real-life events surrounding a group of women from the Women’s Institute, who decide to pose nude for a calendar to raise money for their local hospital, which soon turns them into a media sensation.
“Everyone remembers the film for the nudity but it’s much more than that. Tim Firth has written an extraordinarily funny play about the strength and resilience of a group of women after the death of a loved one to cancer,” explains Julia. “The audience laugh and cry and maybe wonder if this is the performance where one of the props will slip and a little too much will be revealed. It’s a fantastic night out!”
Ahead of living in Los Angeles, Julia’s extensive theatre work included playing lead roles in Laughter In The Rain (UK tour), The Cherry Orchard (Bridge Lane Theatre, London), the world premiere of, Alfie – The Musical (Oldham Coliseum) and the title roles in The Little Prince (Solent People’s Theatre Company) and Cinderella (Mercury Theatre, Colchester). Julia has toured the UK and Ireland playing Barbara Orbison and k.d lang in The Roy Orbison Story – Only the Lonely, and as Brenda in the musical comedy Somebody Loves You, by Charles Way.
Other work includes Les Misérables (West End, London), Mother Goose with Sir John Gielgud, Sir Elton John, Frankie Howerd, Maureen Lipman and Donald Sinden (West End, London), The Pirates of Penzance (West Yorkshire Playhouse) and The Music Man with Brian Cox OBE (New Shakespeare Company, London).
She produced and performed the one-woman play Man to Man (Man in the Moon Theatre, London) and took part in the workshop of Lionel Bart’s musical, Quasimodo. She has also performed at both the 10th and 25th anniversary concerts of Les Misérables at the Royal Albert Hall and the 02 Arena in London.
